For years, granite was the most popular choice for kitchen countertops. Today, though, it faces more competition than ever, it remains a popular choice among homeowners. Why? Because of its natural composition, granite has designs that can’t be replicated. Each slab looks different and is distinctly unique. The best part about granite is that it doesn’t need sealing to keep its beautiful appearance. If you are planning to remodel your kitchen, granite is an excellent choice.

The height of a countertop depends on how it will be used. In the U.S., countertops typically span from 25 to 26 inches (635-660 mm) from front to back. Some countertop designs incorporate an applied or integrated backsplash, which keeps spills from leaking behind the base cabinet faces. Depending on the manufacturer, some fabricators even offer custom designs, such as chiseled raw edges or waterfall-style profiles. The more complex the edge, the higher the cost. Choosing a slate-gray countertop matches the zinc stools in the kitchen. Painted cabinets add a homey touch.

Quartz surfaces are another option for kitchen countertops. These engineered composite stones contain quartz, other minerals, and a resin binder. As a result, they are stain-resistant and easy to maintain. Because they are non-porous, quartz countertops are easy to clean. The downside is that you have to apply a sealant to keep the material clean. Quartz can mimic nearly any design, including granite. Quartz slabs can come in many different colors and textures.

Wooden countertops are beautiful, but they require more care and maintenance than other materials. If you’re a do-it-yourself-er, you can install a tile countertop yourself, but make sure to clean it thoroughly after contact with raw meat. The US Department of Agriculture also recommends against using wooden chopping boards, but the Food Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin has done extensive research on the safety of woodwork surfaces. If you’re worried about the cost, it’s probably best to stick to concrete or laminate countertops.

While you can buy prefabricated concrete or acrylic kitchen countertops, they tend to be more expensive than other materials. However, they are also the most durable and stain-resistant option, although concrete is heavy and requires additional sealants to protect it from stains and moisture. Despite its high price, it is expected to last for up to 50 years. And, if you’re looking for a long-lasting countertop for your kitchen, concrete is an excellent choice.

Tile-inspired countertops are ideal if you want to give your kitchen a traditional look. Porcelain and ceramic tile countertops are great for this type of kitchen, and come in a variety of shapes and colors. Tile-style countertops are generally the cheapest choice for countertops. Depending on the type, they range from about $18 per square foot to around $28 for a square foot. Compared to granite and quartz, laminate countertops can be very affordable, allowing any household to afford them.
